The Pyramids have been reckoned among thewonders of the world, and every effort has beenmade to discover for what purpose they were constructed,and by whom they were built.
Their immense size, their solid construction, thelonely positions in which they are placed, add to theamazement of the spectator.
Many conjectures and assertions have been maderegarding them. Some assert they were the tombs ofthe kings of Egypt, and others differ, and say theywere built for astronomical purposes; and those whogive up guessing or speculating regarding them, considerthey were the tokens of the folly and tyrannyof the rulers of Egypt.
All travellers, and learned men and women whohave visited these gigantic monuments, admit theirgrandeur, and admire their sublimity.
Many expeditions have been sent to Egypt for thepurpose of gaining information regarding these Pyramids;and many public and private individuals havespent princely fortunes in exploring them; and onalmost every occasion a book has been written, andgiven to the world, showing the result of each expedition.Everything that could possibly be said andwritten regarding these relics of antiquity has beengiven forth to the world in all languages, from theremotest times till the present day.
It is now the pleasant task of the author to statethat the vexed question may be set at rest, as thesolution to the mystery has been found. The discoverywas made whilst reading the latest works onthe Pyramids; she recognised some features in theinterior of the Great Pyramid, and recalled to mindfor what purpose such passages have been used, andfollowed up the incident by reading more carefullyevery book, and examining all the illustrations showingthe interior and the exterior of the noble buildings,till ultimately there remained not the shadow of adoubt that the discovery was real.
