Zima, embrace the moment.The Aga Narkis entertainsyour mother, and your governessis upon the watch in a balconyfor your father's return: take,read, fear nothing. But even tho'the Bijoux indiscrets should befound behind your toilet, do youthink it would be a matter ofwonder? No, Zima, no; it iswell known, that the Sopha, theTanzai, and the Confessions havebeen under your pillow. Do youhesitate still? Know then, thatAglaé has not disdained to set herhand to the work, which youblush to accept. "Aglaé," sayyou, "the sober Aglaé!"—Thesame. While Zima was strayingwith, or perhaps contriving howto get rid of the young Bonza Alleluia;Aglaé amused herself innocently,by relating to me the adventuresof Zaide, Alphana, Fannia,&c.—furnished me withthe few strokes, which pleaseme in the history of Mangogul,revised it, and pointed me outthe means of making it better:for if Aglaé is one of the mostvirtuous and least edifying womenin Congo; she is likewise one ofthe least jealous of wit, and oneof the most witty. Can Zimanow think, that it becomes herto play the scrupulous? Oncemore, Zima, take, read, read all;even without excepting the narrativeof the Rambling Toy, whichmay be interpreted to you, withoutany expence to your virtue,provided the interpreter be neitheryour spiritual director nor yourlover.
