PREFACE.

The books catalogued in the present volume were collected by theShakespearian scholar Edward Capell and formed the principal part of hislibrary during the years which he spent in the preparation of hisedition of Shakespeare's dramatic works. After the publication of thishis life's work and the completion of his commentary, the appearance ofwhich however was delayed, Capell parted with his library, the mostvaluable portion being presented to Trinity while the remainder wasdispersed. The conclusion of the Seniority relating to the gift ispreserved in the books of the College under the date June 26, 1779. Itruns "Agreed by the Master and Seniors, that the thanks of the Societybe presented to Edward Capel, Esq. for the valuable Collection of theold Editions of Shakespeare, and of the several manuscripts and printedbooks, relating to the same Author.
