The following collection of verses, written atvarious times and places, principally after theauthor’s final departure from England in 1887, wassent home by him for publication some months before hisdeathHe had tried them in several different ordersand under several different titles, asSongsand Notes of Travel,” “PosthumousPoems,” etc., and in the end left theirnaming and arrangement to the present editor, with thesuggestion that they should be added as Book III. to futureeditions ofUnderwoods.”  Thissuggestion it is proposed to carry out; but in themeantime, for the benefit of those who possessUnderwoodsin its original form,it has been thought desirable to publish them separately inthe present volumeThey have already been includedin the Edinburgh Edition of the author’s works.
