A translation of the portion of the"Handbuch der Parfümerie-und Toiletteseifenfabrikation,"edited by Dr. C. Deite, relatingto perfumery and cosmetics, is presented tothe English reading public with the full confidencethat it will not only fill a useful placein technical literature, but will also prove—forwhat it is chiefly intended—a ready book ofreference and a practical help and guide forthe perfumer's laboratory. The names of theeditor and his co-workers are a sufficientguaranty of its value and practical usefulness, they all being experienced men, well schooledeach in the particular branch of the industry, the treatment of which has been assigned tohim.
The most suitable and approved formulæ,tested by experience, have been given; and[Pg iv]special attention has been paid to the descriptionof the raw materials, as well as to thevarious methods of testing them, the latterbeing of special importance, since in no otherindustry has the manufacturer to contend withsuch gross and universal adulteration of rawmaterials.
It is hoped that the additions made here andthere by the translator, as well as the portionrelating to the manufacture of "Fruit Ethers,"added by him, may contribute to the interestand usefulness of the treatise.
Finally, it remains only to be stated that, with their usual liberality, the publishers havespared no expense in the proper illustrationand the mechanical production of the book;and, as is their universal practice, have causedit to be provided with a copious table of contentsand a very full index, which will addadditional value by rendering any subject in iteasy and prompt of reference.
