I am rather shy about this little book.
If it were not for the kindness of some fewfriends whose knowledge of children farexceeds my own, it would never have seenthe light.
For their encouragement and for the giftof their experiences and advice I am deeplygrateful. I know that they would ratherI did not mention them by name.
The thoughts which I have tried to puttogether have been growing in my mind foryears. Some, in fact, I have quoted fromarticles I wrote some time ago for a magazineno longer in existence.
Perhaps my best excuse for letting thisbook appear is that, though I have nochildren of my own, other people’s childrenhave always been very good to me.
