This story-hour material was first published inthe Monthly Bulletin of the St. Louis PublicLibrary in 1914 and was later reprinted inpamphlet form. It has been slightly revisedfor the present edition but the form and viewpointhas not been changed and most of the notes remainas originally written for the St. Louis Public LibraryStaff.
The editor has made no attempt to compile a completehandbook on story-telling but has merely broughttogether in uniform printed form, story lists and programsfor story hours as they have been used to meetthe needs in the various divisions of the Children'sDepartment of the St. Louis Public Library. No claimis made to originality, but the editor assumes all responsibilityfor the form and standard of the lists ashere presented.
The aim has been to keep the lists brief and to giveshort, practical outlines which may be extended.
Since library story-telling is directed primarilytoward inspirational reading, the selections listed arechiefly from literary sources. A wealth of materialin the form of biography and history has not beenincluded, because books in those classes have beenfully indexed by subject in the library catalogues. For example: a list of Christmas stories has beenincluded among the lists for special days, but nonehas been given for Washington's Birthday or IndependenceDay. There is, however, a list of patrioticand historical narrative poems.
Further explanations will be found in the shortparagraphs preceding each list, and in the index totitles of stories.
