PREFACE.

It will be readily understood that this little volumedoes not affect to set forth anything like a formal historyof the rise and progress of Art in England. The fittingtreatment of such a theme would need much morespace—not to mention other requirements—than I havehere at command. I have designed merely to submitin a manner that may, I trust, be acceptable to thegeneral reader, and not wholly without value to thestudent, some few excerpts and chapters from thechronicles of the nation's Art, with biographical studiesof certain of its artists.

In this way I have felt myself bound so to select mymaterials as to avoid more travelling over familiarground than seemed absolutely necessary. I havetherefore assumed the reader's acquaintance with thelive
