Safe, safe at last, after twenty-fourdays of nothing but sea and sky, ofwhite-crested waves—which made nosecret of their intention of coming onboard whenever they could or of tossingthe good ship Edinburgh Castle hitherand thither like a child’s plaything—andof more deceitful sluggish rolling billows,looking tolerably calm to the unseafaringeye, but containing a vast amount ofheaving power beneath their slow, undulatingwater-hills and valleys. Sometimessky and sea have been steeped indazzling haze of golden glare, sometimesbrightened to blue of a sapphire depth.Again, a sudden change of wind has drivenup serried clouds from the south andeast, and all has been gray and cold andrestful to eyes wearied with radiance andglitter of sun and sparkling water.

Never has there been such exceptionalweather, although the weather of myacquaintance invariably is exceptional.No sooner had the outlines of Madeiramelted and blended into the soft darknessof a summer night than we appearedto sail straight into tropic heat and asluggish vapor, brooding on the waterlike steam from
