THE PURPOSE

of this little book is to procure funds in aid of thefarmers in that part of France which was devastatedby the invasion of the German armies andsubsequently regained by the French.

This region, in part, one of the most fertile inFrance, and which sustained hundreds of thousandsof inhabitants engaged in agricultural pursuits,has been left desolate, with all buildings destroyedand all farming implements, cattle, and farm productstaken off by the invaders for military uses.

Its old men, women, and children, who survivedthe slaughter of invasion, are now undertaking thelabour of restoring their farms. To help in thesupply of seeds, farm implements, and other simplebut essential means of enabling these sufferingpeople to regain by their own efforts the necessariesof life, the compilers offer to the public this bookon Cookery.
