JAVANESE ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT.

The origin of the Oceanic dialects, and of those of India beyond theGanges, more especially the civilized idioms of the IndianArchipelago, is referred to a language which was that of an unknownpeople inhabiting the island of Java. From this primitive language themodern Javanese is supposed to be immediately derived. Javaneseliterature consists of poems, dramas, songs, and historical andreligious writings. The accompanying facsimile is from amythological-religious tract written upon a vegetable paper ofnative manufacture, and ornamented with grotesque drawings.
