Richard Hurd was born at Congreve,in the Parish of Penkrich, in theCounty of Stafford, January 13, 1719-20.
He was the second of three children, allsons, of John and Hannah Hurd; plain,honest, and good people; of whom he cantruly say with the poet—
They rented a considerable farm at Congreve,when he was born; but soon afterremoved to a larger at Penford, about halfway between Brewood and Wolverhamptonin the same County.viii
There being a good Grammar School atBrewood, he was educated there under theReverend Mr. Hillman, and, upon hisdeath, under his successor, the ReverendMr. Budworth—both well qualified fortheir office, and both very kind to him.
Mr. Budworth had been Master of theSchool at Rudgely; where he continuedtwo years after his election to Brewood,while the School-house, which had beenmuch neglected, was repairing. He wastherefore sent to Rudgely immediately onMr. Budworth’s appointment to Brewood,returned with him to this place, and continuedund
