Quaint, old-time title pages sought to presentan epitome of the contents of the volume.While the name of Dr. House occupies thesole post of honour on this present title page, nonewould be more urgent than he to have that placeshared by his wife, Harriet Pettit House, and herassistant, Arabella Anderson-Noyes, and by their godson,Boon Itt, whose achievements occupy a goodshare of the pages that follow.
The essential material in this book has been drawnfrom the letters and journal of Dr. House, now forthe first time available for the purpose. This materialhas been supplemented by correspondence withvarious individuals connected with the principal personsmentioned. The facts thus ascertained have beeninterpreted and amplified by the careful reading ofnearly every book in English on Siamese subjects.For this reason, the narrative may claim to be fairlycomplete and authentic.
Two reasons have prompted publication.
