Several clauses of the new Copyright Actaward severe punishments for introducing andexposing for sale or hire pirated editions ofEnglish works, both in Great Britain and inthe Colonies. The Government absolutelyprohibits the introduction of these nefariousreprints through the Custom-houses on anypretence whatever. The public should bemade fully and perfectly aware that, in consequenceof a Treasury Order to that effect,even single copies of works so pirated, broughtin a traveller’s baggage, which were formerlyadmissible, are so no longer, unless they be cut,the name written in them, and, moreover, so WORNand used as to render them unfit for sale; andthat if afterwards they are found in a CirculatingLibrary, the Proprietor is subject to asevere penalty. Two clauses of the new Customs’Act, moreover, exclude them altogetherafter the commencement of the next financialyear. These measures will, no doubt, be rigorouslyenforced both at home and in the Colonies.
