To my father, Rev. Geo. H. Peeke, whosevote followed his prayers, this little bookis dedicated, except the chapter on the"Church and the Clergy," which is dedicatedto that large majority of the ministrywho vote one way and pray the opposite, astheir clerical forefathers did. These pagesare not written to prove any theory or factexcept the growth of sentiment in the lasttwo centuries against the liquor traffic.Though prepared somewhat as a lawyerbriefs a case, omitting for the most partthe citation of authorities, no fact is giventhat does not rest on the authority of somewriter. The authority can be produced ifrequired. The research represents the cullingof some four hundred volumes.

The reprint of Ebrietatis Encomium,London, 1723, led many of my friends tosuggest the desirability of a more modernwork on the later views and customs concerningdrunkenness. Thanks to the mosttimely and exceptional research of the author,I present for their delectation a treatisealong this very line, which will pleasantlywhile away a winter evening.
