ANCIENT PAPER-MAKING
The tools of the primitive paper-maker consisted of a pulpvat for the fiber-laden water, a frame, or mold across whichwas stretched a mesh of closely-spaced wires, and a removableframe known as the deckle; hence the term “deckle edged.” Thebeating was done by iron shod hammers which were raised andreleased by cams on a shaft turned by water power: this machinecalled a stamper is shown in the foreground of this picture.
