IT SEEMED they had arguedfor years as they were arguingtonight. The man paced back andforth chain-smoking cigarettes; thewoman sat motionless, watchinghim. They glanced at their watcheswith fearful eyes. They heard, withacutely alert ears, the goings andcomings of people in the hall;heard the shattering blast of rocketsin the sky above the city. Andthey argued.

"So you're going through withit tonight," he said heavily, "inyour own way."

"Yes."

"Perhaps I should stop you." Hecrushed out his cigarette. "If thepolice were to hear—"

"No!" The word was thrown athim. "I know you don't mean that. But it's unworthy of you even tosay it." She covered her face withnervous hands. "After all I amyour wife."

He stood over her, his lips tight. There was something of the fragile, finely made puppet about her, hethought, as though she had beenrefashioned a hundred times bysome artisan seeking after perfectdelicacy and precision. He softenedmomentarily.
