MY object in writing this book is primarily tocall attention to some of the many questionswhich are raised by an enquiry into the relativeantiquity of existing plants, and to illustrate thenature of the evidence afforded by the records ofthe rocks. One may agree with the dictum, 'Thereis but one art—to omit,' but to practise this art isoften a difficult task. While fully conscious of theincompleteness of the treatment of the subjects dealtwith in these pages, and of defects in the method ofpresentation, I hope that I may succeed in attractingsome of my readers who are already inte
