Y object in writing this book is primarily tocall attention to some of the many questionswhich are raised by an enquiry into the relativeantiquity of existing plants, and to illustrate thenature of the evidence afforded by the records ofthe rocks. One may agree with the dictum, 'Thereis but one art—to omit,' but to practise this art isoften a difficult task.
