Note

This short sketch was written as anIntroduction to the recent edition ofthe late Rev. J. H. Thomson’s “MartyrGraves of Scotland.” The publishershaving now resolved to issue my sketchseparately as a convenient summary ofthe covenanting struggle, I have revisedand considerably enlarged it.

No Englishman, it has been said, candistinguish the National Covenant fromthe Solemn League and Covenant. Itis to be feared that many Scotchmen arein the same case. The Covenants, indeed, have been sadly mixed up evenby native historians; and comparativelyfew people seem to have any idea of thenumber of these religious bonds.
