There are two orthree kinds of Goats:One kind is called anI-bex, another a Chamois,and the other aGoat. This is an Ibex,and his horns are different[Pg 3]from the tame goatwho has a long beard.The Ibex runs over thehighest rocks as easilyas you can run on thisfloor, though his feet arebut four little hoofs.So also can the Goat.—Iheard of two goats[Pg 4]who met on a narrowridge on the side of avery high rock, as highas the Old-South steeple,and neither couldturn out, nor go back,nor pass along, the pathwas so narrow. Whatwere these two poorgoats to do? If theyfell, it would have killedthem directly, andthere they stood cryingand no one couldhelp them, because noone could get near to[Pg 5]them. People could seethem only. I'll tell youwhat they did. One ofthem kneeled down andthe other went so carefullyover his back, thatboth got safely by.
This Dog is angry.He is barking loudly atsomebody.
The Gazelle or Deerruns swift away when hehears the roar, and thedeer can run faster thanmost other creatures.Venison is the meat ofDeer, and the hunters[Pg 7]shoot him when theywish this meat. TheIndians who live in thewoods, used to shoot thedeer with bows and arrows,before guns andbullets were known.
See this peaked-noseRacoon. This fellow[Pg 8]can run up a tree just aseasy as we can upon theground, and play andsport on the very ends ofthe branches. He takeshis victuals in his twofore paws, and eats likea squirrel. The hunter
